amazonas-birdBirding in Amazonas State, Venezuela gradually birdwatchers around the world are discovering that Amazonas State in Venezuela offers some world-class birding spots especially at Junglaven Camp on the Ventuari River. To date Junglaven has a list of 420 species and more being added with every season. However, for those who are traveling on a tight budget it is possible to see many Amazonas specialties just around the capital city of Puerto Ayacucho. A stay at Orinoquia Camp (on the banks of the Orinoco river, between the Atures and Maipures rapids) will give birdwatchers the opportunity to see the Green-tailed Jacamar, Amazonian Umbrellabird and Guianan Cock of the Rock , not to mention the Long-billed Woodcreeper and a variety of Antbirds.

A day spent along the road to Gavilan offers a chance to find Cinereous Tinamou, Greater Yellow-headed Vulture, Black-spotted Barbet, Many banded, Green and Ivory-billed Aracaris, Yellow-ridged and Red-billed Toucans, Spangled Cotinga, Olive Oropendola, Opal-rumped and Yellow-backed Tanagers.

As if these two areas were not enough, there is also the Provincial Lagoon just 15 minutes north of Puerto Ayacucho. For birdwatchers a visit to Amazonas State is a great opportunity to increase their life lists.
